Simple Renal Cysts
Dr. Ali Rıza ODABAŞa
aİç Hastalıkları AD, Nefroloji BD, Atatürk Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ERZURUM Simple renal cysts are the most commonly acquired renal cystic lesion and are twice as common in men as in women. These cysts may be solitary or multiple. They occur rarely in children, but become incresingly common with age. Cyst is not connected to any part of nephron, although it may originate initially from a portion of the nephron. Simple cysts vary considerably in size, ranging from less than 1 cm to greater than 10 cm. Simple renal cysts are typically asymptomatic. Occasionally, patients with simple cysts present with hematuria, abdominal or back pain due to bleeding. A significant association between simple cysts and systemic hypertension may be seen. The cysts walls are typically thin and transparent, but prior infection can cause thickening, fibrosis, an deven calcification of the walls. Most often, simple renal cysts are detected as incidental findings during abdominal imaging studies. The ultrasonographic findings of simple cysts includes smooth walls, absence internal echoes, and no intracystic debris. If the ultrasonographic pattern is indeterminate, computed tomography should be performed. Keywords: Simple cysts, renal cystsTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2005, 1(4):49-51
