In this article, we performed general evaluation of ESRD and RRT with epidemiologic aspect in Turkey.
Epidemiologic data obtained from Turkish Society of Nephrology Registry on center based questionnaires since 1990 and Health Ministry annual reports.
Number of the ESRD patients requiring RRT have increased at the end of 2003 years with respect to last years in Türkiye. It was found that while incidence of ESRD patients was 118 per million population (pmp), point prevalence of ESRD was 432 pmp. While the mean age of all prevalent ESRD patients were 49 years, mean age of diabetic ESRD patients were 53.1 years. The causes of prevalent ESRD were diabetes mellitus (22.8%), hypertension (18.1%) and chronic glomerulonephritis (16.6%). While main modality of RRT in our country were hemodialysis (HD) (77.4%), kidney transplantation (KTx) (12.1%) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) (10.7%) were other RRT modalities following respectively. The mean age of ESRD patients maintaining on RRT in HD, KTx and PD were 53 years, 33.1 and 45.8 respectively. While the main cause of mortality in dialysis was cardiovascular disease (HD: 49%, PD: 42.4%). Infection was the main cause of death in KTx. There was some important improvement in the qualitative aspects of dialysis patients during last 10 years. A total number of KTx performed in 2003 were 605, 25.6% of them were from cadaveric donors. While 10-year patient and graft survivals were 75 % and 56% in living related KTx patients, patients and graft survivals of cadaveric KTx patients were 71% and %50 in 10 years, respectively.
Prevalence of ESRD has been increasing in our country. Diabetes mellitus was the main cause of ESRD. The primary RRT modality was hemodialysis in ESRD patients. As a result; ESRD was general health problem because of the high prevalence, changing pattern of etiology, complex and expensive treatment modalities required. Keywords: Epidemiology, end-stage renal disease (ESRD),renal replacement therapy (RRT), TürkiyeTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2005, 1(21):1-8
