Renal Replacement Therapies In Chronic Renal Failure

The treatment for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are dialysis and kidney transplantation which are known as renal replacement treatments. The primary purpose of the treatment is increasing the life time of the patients as well as providing relief and comfort and hence maintaining the highest possible the quality of life. More recently kidney transplantation has become the choice of treatment in immunsupressive and antimicrobial treatments because of high success rate due to the developments in surgical techniques and control of infections. However, most patients are continuing dialysis treatment because of lack of donors. Thus, dialysis treatment is still the primary treatment type for ESRD patients. The choice of dialytic modalities varies from country to country. The cost of treatment is quite high both in Turkey and abroad. Deciding on the timing of renal replacement treatment in advanced kidney disease needs to be done in the light of clinical indications and findings besides laboratory findings.Keywords: End-stage renal disease, dialysis, kidney transplantationTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2005, 1(21):82-87
