Comprehending the magnitude of the relevance of renal mechanisms to the development of hypertension requires knowledge of their roles within the context of normal blood pressure homeostasis. In the healthy state, the kidneys maintain blood pressure homeostasis by preserving total body fluid and electrolyte balance and via their various endocrine functions and renomedullary humoral systems. In this paper, the functions of the kidneys in the regulation of blood pressure and fluid balance will be reviewed, in order to provide the basic information required to understand their effects in pathophysiological processes. Keywords: Kidney, blood pressure, hypertension, homeostasis, reninTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2005, 1(38):9-13
