aNefroloji Bölümü, Başkent Üniversitesi Konya Uygulama ve Araştırma Hastanesi, KONYAbNefroloji BD, Başkent Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Hemodialysis is a life saving therapy for patients who have end stage renal disease. İn spite of this, it has complications which can be serious and are not rare. Frequent complications are hypotension (%20-30), muscle cramps (%5-20), nausea and vomiting (%5-15), headache (%5), chest pain (%2-5), back pain (%2-5), pruritis (%5) ve tremble and fever (<%1). Besides, there are rare but life threatening complications such as dialysis disequilibrium syndrome, dialysis reactions ve arrhythmias.
Hypotension is the most frequent complication during hemodialysis. It was declared that intradialytic hypotension is an independent risk factor for mortality in hemodialysis patients . Reduced effective circulating volume, impaired vasoconstriction and cardiac factors are the main causes of hypotension.
Etiology is still unclear of some complications such as muscle cramps,nausea/vomiting, headache and chest/back pain.
Dialysis disequilibrium syndrome is a severe complication. Its manifestations include nausea, vomiting, restlessness, headache, seizures and even coma. Reverse urea effect and paradoxical cerebrospinal fluid acidosis have been disputed.
In summary hemodialysis has many complications. Preventing the complications is a very important measure. If complications, especially the severe ones exist, recognizing them rapidly and careful management can be life saving. Keywords: Hemodialysis, complicationTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2006, 2(4):24-29
