PD should not be thought of as a technique in competition with hemodialysis but rather as a complementary modality and part of the range of therapies that can be offered to the patient with ESRD. In the last years the popularity of PD is increased because it is a simple, comfortable and inexpensive treatment method.
PD performs by exchange repeated with certain interval. An exchange procedure includes drainage, filling and dwell. Three transported forms is used in exchanges of PD: diffusion, ultrafiltration (UF) and absorption. Equipments of PD are PD catheter, transfer sets, connectors and dialysis solutions. PD types are CAPD, CCPD and NPD.
Peritoneal equilibration test (PET) is used to evaluate of UF and peritoneal transport in PD patients. Conventionally the results obtained from the test are used to divide patients into 4 transporter types; high, high-average, low-average and low transporters.
The problems in follow-up of PD patients are electrolyte and acid-base imbalance, UF failure, blood pressure-fluid control and malnutrition.
Because of new techniques and solutions, complications of PD are relatively low and it is used commonly. Keywords: End-stage renal disease, peritoneal dialysis, clinical practice, adeqacyTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2006, 2(4):30-34
