aBaşkent Üniversitesi Tokat Diyaliz Merkezi, TOKATbNefroloji Bölümü, Başkent Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Malnutrition is common in dialysis patients and is related to mortality and morbidity. Therefore it is important to assess nutritional status and nutritioanal therapy in dialysis patients. Nutritonal assessment is made by means of clinical, anthropemetric and laboratory methods. Anamnesis, assessment of the diet, body mass index, skinfold thickness and albumin, creatinin and cholesterol measurement are from these methods. For a more detailed examination subjective global assessment, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry and bioimpedance can be made. Malnutrition can be coupled with comorbid diseases most of them being inflammatory conditions and patients should be checked carefully. The recommended daily protein intake is 1,2 g/kg, daily energy intake 35 kcal/kg in patients standart body weight >60 kg and 30 kcal/kg in patients standart body weight <60 kg. Calories taken from daily lipid intake should be no more than the 30% of total calorie intake. Malnutrition should not be understood as simple deficiency of nutrient intake as inflamation and cardiovascular events is closely related with malnutrition. As it is important to see that the needs of patients is different and every effort shold be taken to personalize the nutritional recommendations. Keywords: Dialysis, nutritionTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2006, 2(4):82-89
