Clinical Assessment Of The Glomerular Filtration Rate
Dr. Özlem TİRYAKİ,a Dr. Celalettin USALANa
aNefroloji BD, Gaziantep Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, GAZİANTEP Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is generally considered the best index of overall renal function in health and disease. It is reduced prior to the onset of symptoms of renal failure, the impairment in GFR correlates with the severity of some of the structural abnormalities observed in chronic renal diseases. Nonetheless, it is not an ideal index. The GFR is diffucult to measure, and the measurements can be insensitive for detecting renal disease, estimating its severity, and monitoring its progression. In clinical practice, GFR is usually estimated from the serum level or renal clearances of the endogenous filtration markers, creatinine and urea. To simplify the assessment of GFR, investigators have studied other clearance methods, such as inulin and low molecular weight compounds chelated to radioisotopes. Using those methods together can increase the accuracy of measurements of GFR. For this reason, this chapter focuses on the clinical assessment of the GFR.with different methods. Keywords: Glomerular filtration rate, glomerular function, renal function, creatinin clearence, chronic renal failureTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2006, 2(38):1-7
