Renal Biopsy
Dr. Cem SUNGURa
aNefroloji Kliniği, MESA Hastanesi, ANKARA The renal biopsy was introduced the clinical practice almost half a century ago but it has contributed to the evolution of nephrology as a subspeciality of internal medicine. Without pathological examination fo the kidney tissue, it would be impossible to gather information about the ongoing disease processes and progression of renal disease. With the advent of new biopsy needles and real-time ultrasound guided techniques, it has become a safer procedure. The processing, examination and interpretation of the biopsy specimen is even more important than the biopsy procedure itself. A recent guideline on the pathological examination of renal biopsies is included in the text. Finally the potential impact of newer diagnostic molecular techniques and their application to nephrology practice is also discussed. Keywords: Renal biopsy, renal pathology, indications and complications, molecular pathologic techniquesTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2006, 2(38):39-45
