Progression Mechanisms Of Kidney Failure
Dr. Yasemin ERTEN,a Dr. Selim Turgay ARINSOYa
aNefroloji BD, Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Chronic Kidney disease (CKD) is a complex syndrome because of its heterogeneous etiology, variable clinical expression and multifactorial pathogenesis of progressive functional deterioration. Regardless of etiology, the end point of chronic kidney disease is commonly end stage renal disease that necessiates dialysis therapy, which is usually together with reduced renal mass secondary to fibrotic changes. There are several factors responsible of CKD progression. These include demographic characteristics such as age, gender, race, genetic succeptibility which are accepted as unmodifiable risk factors. Obesity, diabetes mellitus, high protein intake, proteinuria, hypertension, dyslipidemia, smoking, nephrotoxic agents and hyperuricemia are modifiable risk factors of the disease progression. Keywords: Renal failure, disease progressionTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2007, 3(38):26-32
