Hypertension And The Kidney
Dr. Oktay OYMAKa
aNefroloji BD, Erciyes Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, KAYSERİ There is a close relationship between hypertension and kidney functions with each having important effects on the other. The important role of the kidneys in regulation of extracellular fluid volume and peripheral vascular resistance make them main suspect as a mediator of essential hypertension. Despite many studies, the precise etiology of essential hypertension is stil elusive and, the data suggest the notion that multiple interactive mechanisms play role in development hypertension. In contrast to kidney role in development of essential hypertension, hypertension causes progressive renal failure named ‘hypertensive nephrosclerosis’ which may lead end stage renal failure. Hypertension is the second leading cause of the end stage renal disease in developed countries following diabetes mellitus. Additionly, essential hypertensive patients with renal failure are at increased risk for cardiovascular complications compared with hypertensive patients with normal renal function. So, it is important to to reveal determinants of essential hypertension and hypertension-kidney relationship fort he prevention and treatment of major cause of end stage renal failure. Keywords: Hypertension, kidney, kidney failureTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2007, 3(38):33-37
