aNefroloji BD, Selçuk Üniversitesi Meram Tıp Fakültesi, KONYA Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the most important complication of diabetes mellitus (DM) and the most common cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). DN can develope in both type 1 and 2 DM. While number of DM patients in the world was approximately 150 million at 2000 year, ıt ıs estimated that this number will be approximately 300 million at 2025 year. In Type 1 DM, approximately 20 to 30 percent will have microalbuminuria after a mean duration of diabetes of 15 years and less than half of these patients will progress to overt nephropathy. But, only 20 to 40 percent of Type 2 DM patients with microalbuminuria progress to overt nephropathy and ESRD will develope in only 20% of this patients at 20 years following overt nephropathy. There are various risk factor in DN; like genetic susceptibility, hypertension, worse glycemic control, smoking and dislipidemia. Use of ACE inhibitors and/or ARBs, strict glycemic control and use of antilipidemic drugs may improve progression of DN.Keywords: Diabetic nephropathy, microalbuminuria, pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathyTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2007, 3(38):38-46
