aNefroloji BD, Marmara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, İSTANBUL The prevelance of obesity and metabolic syndrome has steadily been increasing especially in developed countries, resulting in significant public health problems. Obesity and metabolic syndrome has been related to development of hypertension (HT), diabetes mellitus (DM) and atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. The prevelance of chronic kidney disease has also steadily been increasing and is a risk factor for end stage renal disease, cardiovascular disease and premature death. Epidemiologic studies has recently demonstrated that obesity and metabolic syndrome are associated with microalbuminuria and chronic kidney disease independent of DM and HT. Early interventions for the prevention and treatment of the obesity and components of metabolic syndrome can lead to prevention and progression of renal damage. Keywords: Obesity, metabolic syndrome, microalbuminuria, hronic kidney diaseaseTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2007, 3(38):47-51
